About Free and Low Cost MCLE

The UCLA Law Library regularly receives calls from attorneys asking if the library provides free MCLE materials. Unfortunately, the library is not able to provide free MCLE to anyone other than current UCLA Law faculty, staff, and students. However, we have compiled the guide below to help attorneys locate free and low cost MCLE options.

Verifying MCLE Providers

The fact that a provider appears on this guide does not mean that the UCLA Law Library recommends or endorses them. Providers are added to this list so long as they are:

Free or low cost, and
Listed by the California bar as an approved MCLE provider, at the time that they are added.

Before purchasing MCLE from any of the providers list below, please verify on the California bar's website that the provider is still an approved MCLE provider:

Resources for Current UCLA Law Faculty, Staff, and Students

Current UCLA Law faculty, staff, and students can complete their MCLE for free through the UCLA Law Library's CEB OnLaw Pro subscription, using the following link:

Additionally, all faculty, staff, and students at any law school are eligible to apply for fee waivers for individual PLI MCLE programs as part of PLI's pro bono program, described below.

Resources for Pro Bono Topics and Attorneys

There are a number of budget MCLE options available to attorneys who are performing pro bono or other public interest work or are interested in completing their MCLE on pro bono or other public interest topics:

Practising Law Institute (PLI) Pro Bono Programs
PLI primarily offers high quality but pricey MCLE for big law attorneys and is not typically a good budget option unless you are working at a big law firm that already subscribes. However, PLI's MCLE on pro bono topics is reasonably priced and PLI also offers fee waivers for organizations or individuals performing public interest work.
Request a PLI Fee Waiver
PLI waives fees to individual programs for attorneys engaged in pro bono work; law professors and students; and employees of the government, judiciary, and legal services and nonprofit organizations. Additionally, legal services and nonprofit organizations that provide direct pro bono services can apply for free year-long access for their organization as a whole.
Pro Bono Training Institute (PBTI) MCLE
PBTI is a collaboration between the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, OneJustice, and Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County to provide free training on pro bono topics. OneJustice is a certified California MCLE provider and participants can obtain self-study credit for completing PBTI trainings. Trainings are free but you must register with the site.
Legal Aid Association of California (LAAC) MCLE
LAAC offers recorded and live online trainings on a variety of pro bono topics for self-study MCLE credit. Most trainings are free to anyone but some are members only. Visit the LAAC Members page to apply for membership and check if your employer is already a member.

Resources for Picking Up a Few Final MCLE Hours

LA Law Library: MCLE Classes
The LA Law Library offers MCLE classes ranging from on demand videos to hour long lunchtime sessions to six hour Saturday cram days. Classes are typically $20 or $25 per credit, with some free options and cram days at a reduced rate of $75 for six hours. The LA Law Library is listed in the state bar's provider search as the Los Angeles County Law Library.
California Lawyers Association
The CLA was spun off from the California bar in 2018. It provides podcasts and on demand offerings starting at $11.25, self study articles starting at $20, and webinars starting at $55.

Many companies sell compliance bundles or monthly or annual subscriptions that allow you to cheaply complete all of your MCLE:

Beverly Hills Bar Association CLE
Attorneys who join the Beverly Hills Bar Association at the $30 per month sustainer level can access 25 hours of CLE OnDemand. Sustainer membership is free for attorneys in their first three years.
MCLEZ
MCLEZ's complete MCLE compliance bundle is $49, making it one of the cheapest options.
LexVid
At $59, LexVid's MCLE bundle is one of the cheapest options.
ABA CLE Free For Members
The American Bar Association's CLE materials are pricey to purchase individually but free to ABA members. ABA membership dues range from $120 to $495, making joining the ABA a cost effective MCLE option for many attorneys.
Versatape 25 Hour Complete MCLE Audio
Versatape provides online access to MCLE from the San Fernando Valley Bar Association and Pasadena Bar Association, including complete MCLE bundles in multiple specialty areas for $179.
Quimbee California MCLE
The popular Quimbee study aids have expanded into MCLE. Quimbee offers a year of unlimited hours for $199, making it an affordable option that allows you to satisfy multiple reporting periods.
TRG RUTTERPASS
The Rutter Group offers a $595 RUTTERPASS to a year's unlimited MCLE.
Continuing Education of the Bar (CEB) Compliance Packages and Passport
CEB offers a 25 hour compliance package for $750, as well as a yearlong unlimited hours subscription for $840, useful for satisfying multiple reporting periods at once.
