Legal Blogs

Legal blogs (or blawgs) are valuable sources of law-related information. You can find legal blogs in nearly every subject area, by state or region, from a variety of viewpoints, and from all parts of the legal community (law academics, law practitioners, law students, law librarians, etc.). Since blogs are updated daily (and often several times a day), legal researchers can use them to stay up-to-date on current issues. In addition, legal bloggers will often post court documents on their sites and links to other sources relevant to their area of interest.

There are so many legal blogs that identifying the ones most useful to you is a daunting task. Fortunately, there are Web sites that can help you find/target blawgs. They include the following:

Below you will find a selection of legal blogs.

  • Above the Law
Based in NYC, this self-described legal tabloid "takes a behind the scenes look at the world of law." Voted the top blawg of 2008 by the readers of ABA Journal, AboveTheLaw.com is "law-firm-rumor central."
  • Jurist's Paper Chase
The Paper Chase is the Jurist's real-time legal news blog "powered by a mostly volunteer team of over 30 part-time law student reporters, editors, and Web developers led by law professor Bernard Hibbitts at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law."
  • The Volokh Conspiracy
Founded by Eugene Volokh of UCLA School of Law, this is a collaborative webblog providing analysis of developments in the U.S. legal system and courts as well as coverage of recent news and events, mostly from right-leaning or libertarian points of view.
  • Wall St. Journal's Law Blog
Written by the WSJ's Legal Affairs Group, Law Blog "focuses on law and business and the business of law." It consistently ranks at the top of most popular/viewed legal blogs lists.
